In one part of The Room, you walk into a scribble room which was made by Hugo, and it's full of ghosts which are also done in the same scribbled style.

That got me thinking...what if the ghosts, and all the downturns of the guardians is actually connected to Hugo's sickness? Or if he is by some accident, creating them, much like the teddy bears that attack you in the room? Maybe a by product of his unhappiness and anger at being treated for his sickness and confined, or he's gained powers from being a child of the queen and he can't control them. So much so that it makes the Queen unable to realize that to save the world, she'd have to mercy kill her son.

If so, then this makes the ending even more tragic. Batter isn't just a sanctimonious extremist who is bent on destroying the world for God knows why, he's a father who realized that his son is the cause of the impurity of the world and his wife refuses to step in and stop it. That to save everything, he'd have to cauterize the wound, and that his wife would never step aside or take action, and the only way he could purify the corruption would be to kill everything he held most dear. Realizing this, he would have to distance himself from his family, causing even more corruption from the world from the queen and Hugo's negative feelings. So much so that he is doomed either way. If he stays with them and ignores the problem, the corruption will spread. If he leaves, the corruption will hasten.

And realizing this puts him into a spiral until he is warped into a monster as well.

Which might explain the fact that the song "The Meaning Of His Tears." The song when you fight the queen, and why when you go against Hugo, Batter says "from now there will be no more darkness."

Because Hugo is unwittingly the source of that darkness.
