She hadn't seen him in years, yet he hadn't changed that much. He'd grown taller and matured, his shoulders broadened, his hair even more of a chaotic mess of tangles and waves. There were birds in his hair, pidoves on his shoulders that alighted when she stepped past the bushes. They did not go far, but stayed close to him, cooing to themselves in words only he and they could understand.
Pokemon innately trusted and flocked to him. People, too. Without him, Team Plasma would've crumbled before it even began, no matter Ghetsis's delusions of grandeur. He slowly turned, and his intense, innocent gaze softened as he looked at her.
"I've been looking for you," he said.
Always so blunt and forthright. He never bothered with pleasantries or superficial things. He hadn't changed in that respect, at least.
"Me too," she said.
"I've traveled the world these past years and seen many people and many different pokémon. I've met teams that are cruel to pokémon and trainers who were very kind. I've met dozens of pokémon types I've never seen before...I've made so many new friends, and found a distinct...connection between pokémon and humans."
He looked up to a more pokémon flocked around, a flock of in the air, chirping happily about him.
"I don't understand this connection, why they ally themselves to us. I still don't know the right path to take, but I'm closer than I was before. Zekrom waits patiently for me to become worthy of him and use his power to change the world."
"Even when you were the king of Team Plasma, you meant well," she said. She stepped closer, into the clearing and closer to him.
He gave her a searching glance.
"Is meaning well enough? I want to--no--I must change the world. I was chosen by Zekrom for a reason."
"You don't have to hurry; the world waits for you," she said with a smile.
He closed his eyes a moment and smiled. His face lit up when he smiled, softened from intensity to innocence and a fierce gentleness.
"I feel as if I've known you a very long time, but I want to know you more. I've never met anyone who challenged me and made me feel like you do I want you to become my mate. Will you change the world with me?"
"What?" She flushed and stepped back in surprise. He tilted his head.
"Was it too soon?"
"...You just surprised me, is all," she said.
Her face was burning and her heart beating so fast. She hadn't felt like this since that moment when he'd pulled her onto the ferris wheel with him.
"I asked the pokémon, but they all had different strategies. Build her a nest, fluff yourself up to impress her. I asked some humans, but their reasoning seemed even more illogical. Playing it cool and lying about myself seem entirely counterproductive. So I decided simply to tell you, as it seemed only right. It seems so useless to play games, pretend I don't like you, to say cliche words. Wouldn't it make much more sense to simply state it outright? Humans are so confusing at times."
"I suppose pokémon knew better all along," she said.
He nodded. "They're much more simple in that respect. When they have affection, they show it. When they are angry, they fight. No games of words like humans do."
Dappled sunlight fell across his face. She'd never met anyone like him, anyone who touched and shaped her life like he had. Years of searching until she had matured, grown through not only her pokémon journey, but the lessons they had learned together about the world.
Complexity, connection, feeling. A world of white and black. He was at one end of the world with Zekrom, and she was at the other with Reshiram.
She knew her answer, and had in fact always known her answer, even before he spoke the words. She reached out to touch him, and he didn't shy away. It was hesitant, somewhat awkward, her fingers clasped about his wrist.
"It's very sudden, but—"
I can't imagine being anywhere else.
She blushed and the words got caught in her throat.
"Yes....I will," she said. She cleared her throat and tested the words. "...be yours."
They stood there a moment, hand in hand. She felt awkward, as if she should fill the silence with words, but a glance at him showed he felt nothing but serenity. So she embraced the silence, let her heart speak instead. The world was so vast, so many people and pokémon searching for each other. And when they found each other, the special connection formed. She couldn't imagine a life without Emboar, Reshiram, Chandeleure, Swanna and Sawk.
He broke away for a moment to lay down in the grass, and patted beside him for her to join him. She did, and the silence continued, but it felt warm, a blanket she wrapped herself in. She listened for the sound of his breathing among the birdsong.
The grass tickled her neck. He was watching her.
"I was listening," he said.
"To the pokémon? What were they saying?" she said.
"They're bickering over food," N said with a faint smile.
She giggled. "That's all?"
He nodded. "And the ones over there are trying to woo a mate. The others...they're saying that they missed me."
"I did too," she said.
He reached out and touched her, his white shirt a contrast to the black band about her wrist. He squeezed her hand, a comforting gesture without words. Sunlight shone on her face, and she shaded her eyes with her other hand. The warmth of his hand against hers pulsed, like a heartbeat between them.
"Do you think we'll really change the world?" she said.
"We've already started," he replied.
