Sorry for the wait, I had most of this written up, but I had extended family visit and keep me busy.
He had been hard at work at the ledgers, dusty books surrounding him, filled with nostalgia for a time when he actually had time to devote to reading. He turned another page, and pulled back. Soren bit back a particularly vile curse as a small drop of blood pooled from the small cut. For such a small injury, it caused quite a bit of pain. He clenched his fingers, and bit his lip in an attempt to stem the flow of profanity. He didn't need Mist following him around with the curse jar again, especially given that her hands were full following Shinon all the time.
"Something the matter?" Ike poked his head in the door.
"I didn't see you," Soren said.
"I was just passing by and thought I heard you," Ike said.
"Just a paper cut," Soren said. He held up his finger.
Ike came closer to inspect it. "Those hurt like you wouldn't believe."
"I wouldn't think it was an ailment you experience often," Soren said dryly.
"Once is enough," Ike said. "Hmm, let me see..."
He bent down, and held Soren's injured finger gently in his large hands.
"That's a nasty one, all right. Probably the king of all papercuts."
Ike lifted Soren's finger up to his mouth. Soren could only watch, wide-eyed as this unfolded. He was touching Ike's lips He could feel the pressure of them against the cut, soft and faintly moist.
"What....."
"I'm kissing it better," Ike said.
It still stung, but at the moment, it wasn't his finger which his mind was focused on.
"...Why?"
"Mist said it's what you do with things," Ike said. "Like burns...stuff like that."
Soren looked down to his lap. His face was burning, and Ike was just close enough to see.
"What's wrong?"
Soren pulled his hand away. "Nothing."
He tried to gather up his things, yet his mind was dazed, and it left him clumsy. Ike reached to help, which only made Soren clumsier. He tried to steady himself, even as he felt like he'd completely lost some inner balance within himself.
"Soren." he reached out to lay his hand on Soren's shoulder. Usually he'd welcome Ike's touch, but he hadn't completely regained his calm, and it only made the mix of confusing emotions that more intense.
"You're really clueless sometimes, Ike," Soren said.
"That's what father always said. And everyone else. Though this is about the first time you said it. I must have really messed up this time," Ike said.
"No...I'll tell you sometime later," Soren said. "I have something I must do."
"What?" Ike said. "We haven't got any clients today."
Saying I have to go and hide in a shed and hyperventilate wouldn't really help the situation. Neither would I have to stare at my finger and remember that it touched your lip just like I've wanted to for years.
"Titania asked me. I was just finishing up before I went," Soren said.
"Oh, I don't want to keep you. See you at lunch," Ike said.
Soren walked out of the office and into the bright light of a summer day. The sensation of Ike was so burnt in his mind so that he knew he wouldn't be able to focus on anything else. He barely noticed the pain in his finger anymore.
