Fiona had searched for the book long and hard, taking considerable effort, as it was rare. The minute she caught sight of the cover with the starburst of light upon it, she knew it was the one. She thought back to moments of Lady Micaiah leading them, her hand lifted up in summoning magic. It was a picture of beauty, of safety and power. Watching Lady Micaiah like that, she felt faith in Daein as a country for the first time in a long time, at that sight she had left her station at Marado to help the plight of Daein.
Her choice had been made for her at Lady Micaiah's magic, and with it, went her heart. She traced her fingers over the leather bound cover. Would Micaiah smile at the sight of another of her beloved tomes? Her cheeks flushed a bit at the thought, her pulse quickening. Even as she was taught decorum in all things, being around Lady Micaiah left her somewhat undone in ways she had never allowed herself to be.
When it came time to pay, she pulled an old remembrance, a broach of her family's of garnet and gold.
"Will this do?"
A memento of the past exchanged for the future.
Oh, the things I would do for you, Lady Micaiah.

When she returned from the bazaar, the weight of the book was a constant reminder. She waited for a moment when the others had gone to sleep, then approached Lady Micaiah.
"Lady Micaiah. I'm sorry to bother you while you prepare for battle. May
I have a word with you?"
Lady Micaiah gave her a reassuring smile that felt like sunlight to her skin.
"If my memory serves me correctly, you always use this type of tome,
correct?"
Fiona pulled the Thani tome out from her things, held it out like a prize, like her heart offered up to be taken.
There were rumors that Lady Micaiah could read the soul of a person, and Fiona wondered if she was stripped bare before her, all her feelings up to the open. If she was, then she had no fear. Lady Micaiah would never betray her, and she had never felt an emotion so pure, so strong and so loyal as what she felt for Lady Micaiah.
Lady Micaiah laid her hand over Fiona's. Her gold eyes were ever so understanding. The brush of skin, the heat made her blush despite herself. She thought of making an excuse—the fire sure is hot tonight, it's a rather warm evening, don't you think?—but, no. She cherished Lady Micaiah too much for awkward denials. She would take her love as a warrior and defender of her country, head held high whether to heartbreak or requitement, either way it would be standing tall.
"Thank you," Lady Micaiah said. "Thank you so much. My tome had just broken."
"I was very pleased to find it for you, Lady Micaiah," Fiona said. "I only hope that it can help you in your battles to come."
"It's because I know you will be at my back, keeping all of us safe that I can rest," Lady Micaiah said. She smiled, in a way both deep and enigmatic. "With Marado's help, perhaps we can win this war, yet."
"I am happy to give my service, Lady Micaiah," Fiona said.
Happy to give my heart, my body, my life if need be, if it was for you.
