“One day, you’ll kill me.”
It’s not a request. It is a portent, an ill vision to pass them.
It is practically written in stone.
She remembers the first time he bit her, that crazed hunger in his eyes as his new fangs scraped across the tender skin of her neck. He’s always pushed her away like this, always gone off to his own secrets and kept his pain to himself. Stories said that it was a stake through the heart, garlic and holy water. Here, it is a gun that he puts into her hands. She sees an echo of that same beast for a moment, before he fades away to only regret.
He steps away from her as if her proximity is painful.
“Learn how to fire it. Ask the Chairman if need be.”
She lets out a long breath. The feel of the metal is colder than she thought it would be.
She doesn’t want this. She wants a life where Kaname Zero and her can continue living happily. She wants these days to continue where the only worry is that the night class will attract too much attention from the girls (or boys) of the day class. That it would continue in a place in time where everything wasn’t laid out as it is now.
This is what growing up is. Letting go of illusions and finding out that reality is a cold place.
Her fingers tighten over the gun.
She doesn’t want this.
“I won’t,” she says.
He glances at her, quick and desperate. His eyes look unfamiliar in this light. His voice sounds like a stranger.
“You’re the only person I can trust with this.”
Kaname could take him down after he has passed to the point of no return. Other hunters, or even the Chairman himself. But it is her he trusts. It feels like at long last he is opening, unfolding to her. Only in death would she gain this admission, the last of what he has kept from her. Only in losing him would he finally admit everything he’d always felt.
She looked down at the gun, heavy in her grasp. This is what he life would become.
“Alright. I’ll do it,” she says.
Zero turns. For a minute she remembers their prefect duties and growing up with him by her side. She holds the gun close, cradles it and the future that with it seems all too soon.
“I won’t let you down, Zero.”
She bows her head. She can almost hear the clock ticking his life away.
