Geoffrey lacked adeptness for magic, and had only the barest hints of creativity. With Bastian as his guide he could pull of simple sketches and some tunes; his poetry was deemed mediocre at best. Even as he tried to develop these needed skills, to round himself out as knight should be, he knew his talent was elsewhere. Geoffrey’s art was with the lance.
From the first time he lifted it, Geoffrey knew this would be his life. His hand shook, he could barely withstand the weight of the weapon in his hands. Still, with all the strength in his ten-year old body, he held up that lance until the pointed spearhead was directed at the sky. Princess Elincia watched from afar, her knitting in her lap, Lucia close beside her, whispering secrets. He wanted to lift his weapon to his young princess, to pledge his loyalty even then. And yet, he wasn’t quite strong enough yet.
He didn’t have to get closer to know that Lucia had laughed at how serious his expression was been. They all had. It would become a tale told and retold through the years. But Geoffrey was proud of it, proud of himself and that first stumbling moment to knighthood.
That had been his first work of art.
