a mini-guide to browsing the J-fandom.
Feb. 16th, 2006 11:38 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This a guide of sorts to looking for J-fanart, along with some of my preferred sites and fandoms. I'll probably update this with each fandom I feel the need to desperately search out fanart to sparkle over for.
So you want to enjoy the J-fandom....
First, it’s best to have the use of Asian characters installed on your computer, otherwise they won’t show up properly which makes it very hit and miss for browsing.
here is an excellent guide for installing/implementing the usage of Asian fonts.
If they aren’t showing up correctly, go to View > Text encoding > Japanese, sometimes you need to change to unicode to get certain pages to work, but it should be noted they might make other characters (such as apostrophes) appear as Japanese characters, toggling which setting will cure this.
It’s advised you have google up and use the language tools if you aren’t proficient in the language, (I find google translations to have a lot less server hiccups than altavista). and don't want to do a kanji by kanji attempt at translating ;;
These are the J-shorthand, some notable J-fanart sites and some general guidelines when fanart surfing.
I don't claim supreme knowledge of the Japanese language, I'm learning, gradually, so feel free to poke me if I mixed up terms or such.
First up, finding the gallery.
If it's not called "Gallery" "Gyarlly" or "Garlly" it's probably called Irusato (イラスト), fanfiction is called Novel or Novels, often bunshou (文章)
occasionally there'll also be pictures in the diary section, especially oekaki boards (お駅)
[character kanji] wo ai (e.g. 学を愛)
Example: a Fuji wo ai or Fuji-ai site might have Dream Pair, TezuFuji, or any number of Fuji centric pictures and pairings.
Rokka is an example of a Gaku wo ai site, there’s lots of KaiGaku, the artist is obviously very fond of the pairing, but there’s also other Gaku pairings, and a lot of Gaku solo pictures.
Also, there’s uke, (e.g. 空受け) meaning there could be any number of pairings, but they will all feature said character as an uke.
When you see その他 (sonota) in a gallery listing, it means, quitely literally "etc."
Now these are fandoms which I've delved into the J-fandom for, thus, these are the shorthands and some notable websites. (they reflect my pairing preferences, though *grins*)
Sukisyo
Or a cracky little fandom that started out with BL games and now continues on with novels and (there was even an anime, though I go by drama/game canon) The recced sites are is going to be almost completely KaiGaku, with a little ShinNana, SoraSunao/YoruRan and anything SoushiMatsuri that I can find (whhhy am I the only one who sees this?)
好きなものは好きだからしょうがない!! - the full title
好きしょ or すきしょ - Sukisyo (the first is more commonly used)
In alphbetical order:
芥×学 or 芥学 -- or KaiGaku, (in the J-fandom he's called almost exclusively "Kai" I don't think I've ever seen them call him Nagase) In the English fandom, (which is microscopic) he's almost always called Nagase.
祭×空 or 祭空 - Matsuri x Sora
水×空 or 水空 and sometimes 水都×空 or 水都空 - Minato x Sora
空×直 or 空直 - Sora x Sunao
真×空 or 真空 - Shinichirou x Sora (often appears with Minato x Sora and Yoru x Sora)
真×七好 or 真七好 - Shinichirou x Nanami
奏司×祭 or 奏司祭 - Soushi x Matsuri (pretty much included only because I love the pairing *laughs!*)
奏司×空 or 奏司空 - Soushi x Sora
夜×らん or 夜らん- Yoru x Ran (it's better to look up 夜らん because Yoru and Ran are very common names and rarely come up with anything ;;)
夜×空 or 夜空 - Yoru x Sora
Randomly, the most wtf pairing I've seen yet was a toss up between Minato/Shinichirou and Ayano/Aizawa.

Rokka My favorite website, the artist is Kazaya Nagi.
Kakumei Zensen (revolution front) MinatoSora, KaiGaku. The comics are utterly priceless

LISA A small gallery of art, all KaiGaku. The style is this really unique mix of pencil and watercolors with the occasional part CGing.
芥×学推進委員会 This is a KaiGaku shrine, so there's a large variety of fanart and fanfiction (or novels, as they're called in the J-fandom) the quality varies,
Replicant Blue
Mostly ShinNana, the artist does an especially good Nanami. Also has done the only Soushi/Matsuri that I’ve found. le squee
Gakuen Heaven
Gakuen Heaven started with a bl game, then went on to spawn several dramas, two manga adaptations, a recently aired anime, and an upcoming movie. It has a huge amount of manga anthologies for it, interestingly enough.
Apocripha/0
otherwise known as the fandom whose damn name I can never spell right. It's a series of Shounen-ai games currently at three games, a Platina side, a Alex side and a fanbox. There's also a handful of dramas dramas, some PS2 incarnations of the games and a novel.
Most of this fandom's character names are in katakana, and Jade/Platina by far is the most popular pairing in j-fen. I go for the less popular Jade/Sapphirus with a side of Alex/Platina and the occasional Ruby/Carrol and Carrol/Platina.
the shorthand for the general fandom is アポクリ (Apocri)
アレク×プラチナ = Alex x Platina
ジェイプラ & ジェイド×プラチナ = JeiPuru, Jade x Platina
ジェイサフィ & ゼサヒ = JeiSappi, Zesahi, Jade x Sapphi/Sapphirus
ルビカロ & = RubiKaro, Ruby x Carrol
サフィアレ & サフィ×アレク Sapphirus x Alex
参謀×王子 = Sanbou x Ouji, in other words, Jade x Platina and Sapphirus x Alex,
参謀×参謀 = Sanbou x Sanbou, in other words, Jade/Sapphirus
Site recs:
Cherri Cook pretty much all gen, the artist uses this watercolor style which is really well implemented.
-zero- Jade/Platina, Jade&Sapphirus, and lots and lots of Platina (heh) the art here is simply gorgeous, not to mention there's a huge amount of it. I think this artist is a doujinshika as well, I haven't gotten to the comics section yet, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the style before.
kirokiro so cute it should be illegal. I think I about died from the sheer adorableness of a few of the pictures, especially the school one and group picture. Also, I do believe this is the ukest Sapphi ever
I can't read the precise kanji here, but the combination are the kanji for "snow" and "outside" almost purely Jade/Sapphi.
harmonia
really gorgeous fanart, shiny with some really beautiful CGs and others. I think this may be my favorite site for this fandom ♥ (JadeSapphi, AlexPlatina)
