The first day is always the worst. It's only upwards from here, hopefully. Anyways, I've never written this couple before. Here's hoping I didn't slaughter it.
Title: riptide
Day/Theme: August 1st / Disparagers of love, now hear my song.
Series: Tenipuri
Character/Pairing: Saeki/Fuji (or is it Fuji/Saeki~?)
Rating: at least in the PG-13 region.
It started long ago, so long that Saeki can’t even begin to remember when, but the dates weren’t important, they faded in the sun faster than a mirage.
Sometimes it felt like they could drift away on each tide, in out, in out. Each summer, each return and exchange of words; wit, banter, practical jokes. Memories pulled out flushed pale pink in morning sun. All the footprints they made last summer were long gone, but they’d make new ones this year by and by.
— (last year Fuji kissed him, joking. Saeki had dared him to do something brash, anything, and Fuji had grabbed his jawline and pressed lip to lip. Fuji’s hands felt gritty with sand and his lips tasted of salt, saltier than tears. And Saeki had taken it further, twisted and opened his mouth, lips to teeth, exploring and conquering and being conquered. When Saeki let go it felt as if he’d been holding his breath for hours underwater. His lungs felt ready to explode. )
They aren’t awkward, even after time this time. Even distance can’t break the strange sense of comradery. Every year they fall back into the same flow as if it’d only been a week and not a year. Years. Saeki knows this is just a stage, an oddity to their friendship.
––(this summer he will dare Fuji again, Saeki thinks. He will dare and Fuji will go further, deeper under the water, skin and moonlight, taste, touch, sight, each sense pushed to its very limit. He will learn the expanse of Fuji’s skin by heart, map it out so he’ll remember it throughout the fall and winter and spring with only a few calls and postcard to remember the summer heat. )
“Hey” Saeki says. it’s not elegant. He didn’t mean it to be.
Fuji smiles, but that is not uncommon.
Little has changed since then. Fuji is slightly taller, his frame is still girlish. His hair has grown longer.
“Are you going to put your hair in a ponytail this year Or pigtails – you’d be cute that way”
“Maybe” Fuji says “but you’d have to wear nailpolish to match”
– (They’ll fade out like the tides, Saeki thinks. Dry up and out and go back to their own lives.
The sunset fades gold into the sea, as if it was being devoured whole. With that seconds pass by in a flurry of footsteps, movements, measures. Fuji will be gone until next summer, and the next and the next and the next.
One day he won’t return, and the ocean will reclaim what they had deep beneath its depths. )

Date: 2007-04-06 12:57 am (UTC)I usually hate fics that use this method--the parentheses method, as I think of it--but this is just gorgeous, and I hardly think about it at all. I'm generally dispassionate about Fuji, but I love Saeki and their relationship, and the richness of your writing just captures everything I like about them, and so well. All the wording you use is breathtaking, especially the kiss, and I wish this fic was thousands of words longer even as I admire its poignance.
I'll be coming back to it for a long time. :)

Date: 2008-12-14 05:24 am (UTC)SaekiFuji is an awesome pair.
One thing I noticed - I don't know if it's my browser screwing up, but you have my background and my banner which I hand made. It was just strange, since I haven't shared it, or gotten any comments saying that people would like to use it.
Thanks for that. It was great.
