Title: Ice Cream Cake
Series: Ace Attorney
Character/pairing: sort of pre-Skyemadhi (Nahyuta/Ema)
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 2,400
Summary: Shortly after meeting Prosecutor Sahdmadhi, Ema decides to try and turn over a new leaf, and be nice to a prosecutor (who isn't Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth) for once.
Author's note:
A missing scene set slightly before the Magical Turnabout. This assumes that Nahyuta was hanging around for a little while prior to 6-2 murder, because of how Ema speaks of him in early 6-2 makes it sound like she hadn't just met him that morning.
This is also why she isn't complaining so much about Nahyuta, lol. I took inspiration from her talk on the prosecutor in 6-2 where she won't shut up about how polite and what a nice smile he has.
heavy drinker Ema is canon via some of the artwork for AA4!
Happy Holidays, Suzume!
Ema's mood had lifted considerably lately. She'd (finally) graduated, and was a forensic scientist, the fop was overseas and there was nothing but clear skies ahead. (No pun intended. Okay, pun sort of intended.)
Left in the past was her messy desk (mostly to spite Prosecutor Gavin), openly mocking the judge and/or her prosecutor in court, and Snackoos as a coping method. Sure, she still enjoyed them. They just wouldn't be one three of her main food groups, with alcohol being the fourth.
Of course, she wasn't about to toss away her favorite food. She'd just respect the signs said no food or phone in the lab.
(Most of the time, anyways.)
Even more, there was a new prosecutor around. She hadn't worked a case with him, but every single interaction with him had made her feel like life was looking up even more.
So, when she accidentally caught sight of the papers of the new Prosecutor, an idea began to form. And sure, it was stupid and impulsive, but that was pretty much on brand for her. And maybe the whole idea came between drinks of Snackoo vodka.
And, sure, he was temporary. But, this could be good practice for later. And frankly? Ema needed all the practice she could get in actually getting along with a prosecutor.
Besides, this prosecutor was much better than the fop. He never broke into song, his gold was tasteful and somehow never blinded her. He was calm and had such a gentle smile and certainly never forced her to listen to top forty reject music. Plus, wow did he know how to dress. And he had so many interesting stories about working overseas.
And he loved food.
She ignored the part of her mind which was going uh-huh, that sounds like a crush, and you're just using it as an excuse to spend time with him.
It wasn't, really. She was just being nice to a foreign prosecutor who she would probably never see again once he headed out, which was a shame because he was very polite and had frankly, stunning. (What? She had eyes. Saying otherwise would be disingenuous! And Ema was not disingenuous. Blunt to the point of rudeness, actually rude, occasional snack throwing, but never disingenuous.)
He'd been nothing but nice to her in this week, constantly complimenting her work. Plus, it was actually pleasant to interact with him. He had such a soft smile, and was always interested in her going off on about science. He never rolled his eyes, or had that glazed look, or tried to suddenly fake some emergency to get away from her science lectures.
In fact, she even thought he actually liked them.
Anyways, she was just being nice. Really. It was good practice after years of being at war with Prosecutor Fop. Proof to herself that the new Ema would and could manage to actually nail the whole being personable with prosecutors (who weren't Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth) part.
(Okay, maybe nail wasn't the best word to use in regards to Prosecutor Sadhmadhi.)
And maybe, if he stayed a little longer, they could work together more. Just think of the cases they would solve!
For science!
Also, he'd never stop praising her once he saw her skills, Ema thought smugly. Seriously, they'd spend the entire time solving crime, eating, talking about science, talking about food, and he'd actually appreciate her for her skills!
(She didn't have a crush. Honest.)
*
Ema peeked into the door. Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth had been letting Prosecutor Sahdmadhi read some of the cases in his office, which was really quite an honor. Prosecutor Sahdmadhi had a pen in his graceful fingers as he finessed that paperwork. He glanced up, and a smile slowly formed on his face. The sunlight brought out the natural highlights on his silvery braid, and cast him in an almost saintlike glow.
Wow, what a soft and gentle smile.
"Hey, Prosecutor Sahdmadhi. You free?"
He nodded. "Yes, I am now. Is there something you needed?"
"Yup. You, for lunch."
"Pardon me?"
"Are you hungry?"
"Ah...no, I just was about to take a break from these studies and find some refreshment," he said.
"Good, so was I. And I know a great place. I'll show you the way, as it isn't too far from here. We won't even have to take the bus."
Ema rolled her eyes at the smiles on the detectives' faces as she left with him. They were probably talking about her. She was a favorite in the rumor mill and gossip train. They'd thought the same about her and Prosecutor Gavin and they were still very wrong. So wrong because not only would she not go for Prosecutor Fop ever, he was dating Apollo.
This time, they were only slightly wrong. They weren't technically dating, but who knows where it might go.
(She didn't have a crush, honest! But she had eyes and who knew what could happen. The possibilities were endless.)
When they were past the gossip machine that was the precinct, Ema finally spoke again.
"Anyways, it's this ice cream shop. They've got some good french fries, too. I'm glad they branched out into other food because then I don't have to make multiple stops at lunch."
"An ice cream cake shop? This is deeply intriguing."
"I thought you'd get a kick out of it, considering how you went on about the food from the vending machine."
He clasped his hands together and bowed. "I will follow your exemplary expertise in such matters. Truly, you are a sage full of wisdom when it comes to eating."
Ema cracked up at this. Only Prosecutor Sahdmadhi could come up with something like that. And not even sarcastic, either.
"So, they specialize in both ice creams and cake, thus the name?"
"No, it's an ice cream cake. You ever had one of those? I didn't see it listed on Khura'inese sweets," she said.
"I assumed they were separate entities. You're saying that the United States of America has found a way to mesh ice cream and cake? ....Truly incredible."
"You're in the USA now. Trust me, there's no such thing. There's a whole trend of putting breakfast cereal and bacon on desserts. Sometimes both at once," Ema said.
"Bacon on desserts? I am not sure whether to be horrified or intrigued. I believe I am both at once," he said.
Which pretty much summed up Ema's thoughts.
Ema glanced at her phone. "There's a store right down the road. I should know; I go there all the time for lunch. A shame they don't have one of those frequent buyers cards where you get a free menu item every day. I'd max out every week."
She caught sight of this coffee chain store. What way to ensure she'd stay up way too late watching Netflix True Crime documentaries in a state of only somewhat sobriety than coffee after work?
Ema had a certain habit (which Prosecutor Gavin found hilarious, another reason why she was pissed at him) of getting snacks on the way to getting snacks.
"How about a little detour? I could use a pick me up. Ever had a Caramel Macchiato?"
"Not until this day. However, I believe I will be introduced to this 'Caramel Macchiato' now? Even the name sounds delectable," Prosecutor Sahdmadhi said.
"Oh yeah," Ema said.
*
Prosecutor Sahdmadhi kept sipping at his coffee with the sort of awe of someone who had found if not the meaning of life, then a great joy of life.
Which was how Ema spent most of her days.
The chain store bakery was filled with white tiles and little chairs around tables shaped and painted like Oreos.
He studied the menu as if he were looking for the meaning of life. Both his hands were behind his back. She hadn't seen him so intense since he pulled his last all nighter for the case to better understand American culture and laws.
"So, which one do you want?"
"To this, I must submit to your superior knowledge. All of them look as if they are an exquisite taste of paradise itself. I feel as if with one bite, I would attain enlightenment in this lifetime for sure."
"Dang, that's not helping narrow it down."
Though she kind of liked it when he talked about submitting to her. Even if it as just talking about having her make the order.
"I'll just get the specialty stuff, okay? Maybe we can go through the entire menu together sometime, if you keep taking cases here."
"Yes, that sounds sublime."
She ordered both of them the specialty black bean and tofu burger, a side of their spiced fries, with an Oreo ice cream cake to come later.
Ema smiled. "Happy birthday, Prosecutor Sahdmadhi."
"Birthday?"
"Oh, they don't have that where you came from? It's where you give someone something special because you're grateful that they're born."
Which sounded a lot more romantic now that she thought about it. Talk about a slip of the tongue.
"No, they have something similar....However, I have not had anyone grateful for my birth in some time."
Ema smiled. "Seriously? I find that hard to believe. I mean, you solve a lot of cases, right? Isn't law a big aspect of Khura'inese culture?"
"I did some googling to try and better understand your culture and not put my foot in my mouth when talking to you. The wikipedia page is really lacking and I had to use google translate plenty of times. Which is a bit lacking, but better than nothing."
Which, honestly, she was proud of. Not only had she passed her exams finally, she'd gone out of the way to be nice to this new prosecutor, which was in no way basically cyber-stalking.
(He didn't have an online presence to follow anyways. The best she could find were some articles written up about him in overseas newspapers. At least she still remembered her German from when she studied overseas.)
"Anyways, I caught sight of it when I was filing some papers and I thought I'd get you a birthday cake. Once we're done with this, we can move on to that Oreo Ice Cream Cake."
He took a bite of the burger.
"So many....flavors. I feel as if I have learned something important right now."
"The importance of being hungry?" she teased.
He nodded. "As the saying goes, the best seasoning is hunger."
See, this was part of the reason why she liked eating with him so much. He just got so into food. Prosecutor Gavin never wanted to eat carbs like she did. Or to be more precise, fifty servings of carbs a day, like she did.
Before he'd even finished the burger, the cake was brought out to them. His green eyes widened at the site.
"How...remarkable."
"You say that, but wait until you get a bite," Ema said.
Prosecutor Sahdmadhi stared in awe at the big white cake before them. "This is....such a beautiful work of art."
Dang, if only she could find somebody who looked at her like Prosecutor Sahdmadhi looked at Oreo Ice Cream Cakes. Or how she looked at Snackoos, her face pressed into the vending machine glass as she waited for the bag to drop down after she paid.
"Thank you for this, Detective Skye. This was a very welcome surprise. I have not celebrated my birth in quite some time. This place of law has been very kind to me, as have you. I very much enjoyed listening to your talk on this 'forensics.'"
"Oh, anytime. Honestly, it was nice to have someone around who wasn't tired of me going on and on about stuff. It's just so fascinating, I can't stop."
"I just..."
What was she going to say? Hoped he stayed a little longer? Thought it'd be nice to do a case together? Thought that maybe for once she might actually be able to get along with a prosecutor who wasn't Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth for once?
"I just wanted to do something nice for once. Thanks for listening to me," Ema said.
"It is, indeed. Please feel free to go on about your 'forensics,'" Prosecutor Sahdmadhi said.
Ema took a bite of the cake, and let the array of flavors and textures melt in her mouth. The cold and creamy vanilla ice cream, the faint rough chocolate of the cookies. All together, it formed to something--as he'd said, completely sublime.
Prosecutor Sahdmadhi closed his eyes as he took a bite. He looked so reverent as he thoroughly tasted that bite of ice cream cake.
"Delicious," he said softly.
"This is a wonderful gift, thank you. I shall treasure this memory for all of my days, Detective Ema Skye."
She couldn't help but laugh a little at that. He treated everything like it was an ornate ritual. It was kind of hilarious to see his reactions. So much so that she wanted to see more of them, and spend more time with them.
Not being at war with a prosecutor felt nice, honestly. Maybe she'd try more of it. And who knows? Maybe they'd even work a case together for real. They might even be a great team.
Author's note: And then Ema promptly went to war with Nahyuta like ten minutes later, but they still were a good team and she was still thirsty for him. The end.
