Day/Theme: May 15th / a little taste of power and a shiny uniform

Character/Pairing: Kurogane, Fai

A/N: inspired by one of the chapter headers.
It is late in this world, the children (as Fai puts it, their children) are already sleeping –
the candle flickers in the dark, crickets chirp outside the window. Fai sits in the twisted tree outside, his legs folded beneath him, humming contentedly along.
Kurogane writes long elegant strokes of black calligraphy, the price for their stay at the inn tonight.
Fai steals through the window, creeping close enough to peer over his shoulder.
“Won’t you teach me?” Fai says, all spice and saccharine, the continual thorn in his side.
Kurogane (begrudgingly) teaches Fai the nuances and beauty of the language, the strokes of each kanji, the subtleties between different parts of it, verbs, nouns, present tense – all with his own inflection and thoughts interwoven.
Fai teaches him some words of his own language, with its bizarrely shaped letters and near impossible pronunciations, all its accents and superficial meanings.
Hon Kurogane says, pointing to the book he was reading, and Fai replies with one from his language. (“isu – chair, yuka, floor, mado, window” Kurogane says, pointing to each one as if talking to a child. Considering that it is Fai, this isn’t an abnormality. Fai always replies with his language, which sounds like he has a mouthful of water, and he can’t breathe. )
This contiunes until Fai points to Kurogane and says something in his own language, giggling all the way.
“What did you just call me?!”
“Someday you’ll learn enough, and then you’ll understand” Fai replies.
Muttering a curse under his breath, Kurogane goes to the next subject.
The writing system is confusing to Fai, until Kurogane described that it was actually a series of pictographs, two concepts make up one. (“aah, Kurorin. This is difficult” “Idiot, you’re the one who asked for it!”)
Taking a spare parchment and the remainder of the ink, Fai practices while Kurogane takes his leave for a cup of sake (and to check on the kids – something he’d hardly admit in front of that moron)
When he returns, Fai is proudly displaying his masterpiece from long, slender fingers, the ink is still slightly damp, and begins to run, ever so slightly.
Four poorly drawn stick figures, one smaller and obviously female, one younger male, one angry looking man and one gleeful looking man. There’s hearts and starts scribbled around, a house and a smiling sun.
“It’s family” Fai says, beaming.
