bonnefoisI wrote this up on tumblr in response to a comment left on a meta, but I hate tumblr and talking to people on tumblr and tumblr, so I dropped it here because it seemed a waste to trash it.

He's also been shown to have trouble reading, there's even a theory that he's dyslexic, but he went through all those books in the hope of being as good as possible for Miss. Pauling. He worked his butt off for those few minutes with her...
This meta is a million years old, but have a headcanon because even if i haven’t played the game since 2015, I will never fall out of love with talking about Scout being ADHD. (@scorrowofsorrow thanks for all the kind comments and reblogs of my old stuff.)
Dyslexia is a possibility! I could see it, being dyslexic myself. The headcanon I’m personally like 100% on is that he’s adhd. Actually it’s less a headcanon as i will argue it’s canon.
(Also note, this keyboard is having troubles so if there’s weird capitalization, or lack of capitalization, it’s because the shift key suddenly stuck and I couldn’t get it unstuck.)
As an adhd person, I completely recognize the signs. His leg bouncing in introducing the steam (x) is something i do constantly. Interrupting people is another clear ADHD sign. It’s less arrogance and suddenly thoughts are there and they NEED to be expressed and shit, someone else was talking? sorry about that, I hyperfocused in the moment and forgot everything else. Another ADHD sign is--okay this is hard to explain, but it’s like feeling uncomfortable if you can’t express a thought. It builds up more and more uncomfortable and suddenly you’re bursting into the group chat or conversation because you just HAD to get that thought out.
And obviously, this can affect reading. One minute you’re reading and the next minute, you gotta just. Get up and do some jumping jacks. kick your feet a bit. Wait you had a book to read. Also it affects speech like, ideas and sentences can flow together incoherently because your brain is moving so fast. So you jump around from topic to topic, then veer back suddenly to the last one.
Actually mix that with dyslexia and you get this like weird, rapid fire mixed metaphors. Like Malapropism on steroids. Stuff non-dyslexics often don’t realize is that it can affect numbers processing/math grades, and can just make you spit out weird backwards and opposites things so you have moments of Crap, I didn’t mean to say soft, I meant to say hard, or other things. You’ve been reading and suddenly you realize that you didn’t take in a single word because your mind went ‘...mmm, burgers.’
Another thing is a rather rare point from Gun Mettle there’s this Pauling contract where she’ll mention that he sent like a million messages. I could never get it when I played despite trying every day for the ‘i need you’ (x) and this other rare one, but it’s been capped and found in the files, so it was a thing. Lemme bring it up:

I sent a million messages because suddenly i had a thought and wanted to share it and I love you? totally ADhD thing. “I double text because i have a lot of thoughts? FRIEND, LISTEN TO MY THOUGHTS” very ADHD. I personally wake my gf up with like 20+ memes, at least half romantic on pinterest then at night she gets treated to 50 million links to animal videos. “I didn’t mean to double text you but actually I told you every single thought which came around that i had?’ ADHD.
(my gf is very patient, for the record.)
so yeah, I cannot say definitively whether valve intended scout to be ADHD, because I do not know of any interview ala Symmetra being ASD) but he sure has a lot of adhd signs that I recognize from things i have done due to adhd, and i could def see dyslexic as well.
another option that I wrote ten million years ago and never posted on tumblr, copying here: Okay, but hear me out. The comics have established that Scout can read, but not well, and that he specifically chose large print children's editions of books.
What if he just needs glasses, but won't wear them because he thinks it'd make him like a nerd?
And what if having a thing for Miss Pauling changed all that, because he figures if she's sexy and badass and cool with glasses, he can be too?
Imagine Scout getting a clear view of her for the first time, and just clutching his chest in awe.
