Near the end of Expiration Date, Scout had a hard time getting Miss Pauling’s attention during the fight with the bread creature. She’s distracted by calling orders, and focused on getting everyone out alive. Most of his confession is seemingly completely missed by her in the chaos.
However, when he said “In my last few hours” she finally hears him. Seconds later when they’re trapped in with the monster, and wondering if they’ll even make it out alive, she takes his hand.
Her taking his hand wasn’t just a means of escaping. It was her answer to what everything he’d been trying to tell her earlier.
