Author's note: Fic_Promptly: strange bedfellows / ladiesbingo: illness. Becky wanted sickfluff and she got it.

He closed the door behind him as quietly as he could, but not enough to keep from rousing her.
She wore a crown, slightly too small, slightly askew in her messy black hair. Two rhinestones were missing, but she kept it close with old memories of a mother she never remembered. The covers were pulled up to her chest, with a small throw circular black pillow which she clung to.

He'd driven miles from a just finished mission, far from dark until dawn to return to this place. Even though Quistis assured him it was a minor cold, that kind of excuse couldn't keep him away.

"Rinoa..."

"There you are. You look pretty tired, did you drive all night again? Sigh, what am I going to do with you, silly? It's really sweet, though. You're really like the kind of knight that some of us girls dream about meeting."

Squall cleared his throat, unable to respond to her. She never minded much. She put up with his quiet and filled it with her own peculiar joy.

"Do you want some soup?" He said. He realized just how stupid the words sounded as he said them, but he couldn't keep quiet and couldn't stop worrying about her.

She tilted her head, dark hair falling over her shoulder.

"Are you worrying again?"

Squall didn't reply.

"Silly me, I should've known the answer to that was 'always.'"

She smiled and something within him felt more alive by the fact, a small bit of summer in a cold, cold world. No matter what the world proved each cynicism right, she would gently undo them with kisses and that determination no one expected of her.

"I want you here," she said.

"I'll catch your cold," Squall replied.

"I said 'in sickness and health' didn't I? I'll take care of you. And if I catch your cold, we'll just keep taking care of each other until the cold gives up and goes home. How could it ever stand up to something like that?"

She smiled in that slow way which made him wonder if she was delirious, or if she was just full of the same wonder at life which compelled and confused him. She reached out to him, and he shrugged off his coat. There was a star sticker on her left hand that caught the little light in the room, another at her shoulder and elbow. Leave it to her to just cover herself in stickers to cheer herself up. She found happiness where he could find none. Simple things, and in every hidden place, she could find hope no matter how dire it seemed. He didn't bother to do much more than pull off his boots before getting into bed with her.

Rinoa let out a happy sigh. "See, now everything is better. It doesn't matter if I feel miserable, if I'm with you, it's not really misery, is it?"

He buried his face in her back, her long dark hair tickling his face. Arms about her waist, he held her tight enough that nothing, not sickness or witches or governments could take her away from him.
