Author's note: any, any, it's raining cats and dogs. Modern AU, because adorables. Late birthday present for lavendre/barefootbeanie which I started on time, but didn't get a chance to finish until now.

Mist is about 5 here, Ike and Soren are about 7-8.

The yellow umbrella with duckies and rainbows had been a gift from when her father was away on his business trips, and Mist had treasured it. Had the rules not be umbrellas stay with the shoes on the doormat she would've dragged it to bed with her and slept with it held close, like a teddy bear.

Today that umbrella was furled out, and her too-big yellow galoshers came up just under her favorite pink and black stripey socks. It wasn't quite big enough to avoid the spray of gutter water from the passing cars. Mist stuck her tongue out at every one.

But today wasn't a puddle jumping day, because she was on a mission. A mission that was soon interrupted by her big brother stomping out to join her. He wasn't even grumpy, he just did everything loud and clumsy like.

"What are you doing?" Ike said. He'd forgotten his coat and umbrella as always, but only a few drops had fallen on him, as Soren had followed close behind, and he never forgot his umbrella. Father and mother was always saying that Ike and Soren were joined at the hip, but she'd looked before and didn't see any tape or glue at all.

"Father said that it's raining cats and dogs. I wanted to catch the kitties and doggies, and make sure they weren't hurt," Mist said.

"The pavement is awful hard to fall on," Ike said. He'd know, given how many times he'd tripped and Soren or their mother had bandaged him up. There wasn't a day when his face, his arms, his hands or knees weren't plastered with bandages of with super heroes in them.

"It's a metaphor," Soren said.

"A what?" Ike said.

"Meta-four? Is that like mach-four, but with meta meta?" Mist said.

Soren frowned all grumpy like and shook his head. Sometimes, he really reminded her of Oscar The Grouch, which was funny because she knew an Oscar and he was even green, but he wasn't grouchy at all.

"No, it's...."

Ike and Mist looked expectantly at him.

Soren sighed. "Forget it."

Mist looked back to the street. She'd seen seven yellow cars, three blue ones and a red one, but she hadn't seen a single kitty. Maybe she had to look harder, or did it require putting out milk to see the kitties and doggies it was raining down?

"If you're going to be catching them, shouldn't you have leash?" Soren said.

"We don't have any leashes though," Ike said.

"Maybe rope! Father has rope!" Mist said.

Mist charged in towards the door, only stopping when she heard the crash. She turned, but Soren was there, already pulling Ike up and wiping away the dirt from his cheek with the edge of his black sweater.

Mist was in first. The house smelled warm, like cookies and tea. She rushed in a few steps before she remembered that her galoshers were still on. They went glug, glug, slosh when she walked, because they were full of water. She tipped them upside down, the water spreading all over the floor and doormat, and then ran towards the kitchen with wet feet leaving little streaks along the brown rug of the living room.

Mother turned around, settling the phone on the hook. The TV was still loud in the other room.

"And just what do you think you're doing?"

"We're catching kitties and doggies!" Mist said.

"The only thing you'll be catching going out like that is a cold," she said. She pushed the damp hair from Mist's forehead and planted a kiss there.

"But the kittiesss!"

"You can put milk out for them after all of you take a bath," her mother said.

"Mmmmm, okayy," Mist said.

Soren and Ike came in. Ike had a brand new scrape to add to all the others.

Mother clicked her tongue in disapproval. "You weren't running in the rain again, were you?"

"Mist ran first," Ike said.

"Mist manages to walk without tripping over her own feet," mother said gently. She bent down to inspect Ike's face. There was already a bunch of super hero band-aids criss-crossing over his chin.

"Did you put antibiotic cream on it?" Mother said.

Soren nodded. So that was what had taken them so long.

"Good. Now, I think it's somebody's bath time," Mother said.

Ike let out a groan, but Mist was up, clapping in glee. "Oooh! Baftime! Baftime! Can it be bubble baf?"

"Yes," mother said. "Ike, you get first bath."

"But, but, ladies first!" Mist protested.

"You're hardly a lady," Ike said.

"Mothhherrr, Ike is being a meanie butterhead!"

"But she isn't," Ike said. "Ladies are big and stuff. And they wear puffy dresses."

"My dresses are puffy!" Mist puffed out her cheeks in anger.

"You look like a puffer fish, now."

"I do noooot. Motherrrr—"

"Be good, you two," mother said.

Mist huffed. Ike looked up at her as he'd been punished.

"A bath, really?" Ike said.

"Yes, dear," she said, leaning down to ruffle his hair.

"I'll draw the water," Soren said.

After Soren had gone on to the bathroom to draw the water, Mist threw her arms about her mother, but was only tall enough to reach her leg.

"Is Soren a robot?" Mist asked. "Because I won't tell if I'm not 'pposed to and it's a secret."

Her mother laughed. "No, what gives you that idea?"

"He's not a kid, he's not an adult...is he a special puppy? Is that why we got to keep him?" Mist said. Her eyes lit up at this. "Can I put ribbons in his hair and brush him and take him on walks?"

"No," her mother said. "But he is special, and you should be kind to him. Heaven knows he deserves all the kindness he can get."

"I'm nice to him," Mist said. She pouted. "Reaaal nice. I even tried to share my cake with him earlier, but he didn't want it."

"You're a good girl," mother said. She ruffled Mist's hair, and Mist opened up her arms.

"Hugtime, hugtime, mother!"

Mother smelled like cooking, like flowers in springtime when she got to jump in all the puddles in her rubber boots. Mother hugged her tight and rocked from side to side.

"Soon you'll be too big for this," mother said.

"I'll never be too big for hugtime or baftime," Mist said.

"Well, I hope so, otherwise you''d be awful smelly."

Mist giggled. "I'll never be stinky!"

She trailed off after her mother as she went to check on the boys. She peeked out from behind her mother's skirts and saw Soren putting some of her no tears shampoo into Ike's hair.

"I smell like strawberries," Ike said. He looked almost as grumpy as Soren usually did. Except Soren didn't look grumpy this time. He did when he caught sight of Mist, though. Then Soren sunk into the water, like he was a submarine, until half his face was under water. There was a bunch of bubbles on the top of his head like a flower crown. He smelled like strawberries, too.

"Is it enough now?" Ike said. He made a scrunchy grumpy face. Ike really hated baftime, because he was a butterhead and didn't see a good thing when he saw it. Like puffy dresses and strawberry bubbles.

"I suppose so," mother said. She put Mist down.

"Now you need to go pick out your favorite pajamas to wear," mother said.

Mist ran out, bumping into the wall as she did. It hurt, but she didn't cry. She went into her room, all yellow and blue and full of stuffed animals all over. Ike and Soren had to share rooms because they were boys.

It was hard to pick her favorites, because they changed every day. Sometimes she loved the yellow feetie ones with bunnies on them the best, other times she liked the pink nightie with the hearts all over it and frills at the bottom the best. Today was a bunny day. She picked it up, dragging it along the way as she went back to the bathroom. Ike and Soren were gone, and the water wasn't safe yet. It was father's job to check her closet for monsters, though Ike did it sometimes, too. Mother got the burny monsters out of the water and poured the bubbles in until it was like jumping into soft bubblewrap.

Mist peeked around the corner and down the stairs.

Ike and Soren were wrapped up in the same blanket, so close that some of Soren's damp hair had stuck to Ike's cheek. She could see the faded red of Ike's super hero pajamas, and Soren's dark ones. Ike looked like he was about to fall sleepy on Soren's shoulder, and Soren was watching something on TV about fishies.

"I wanna see fishies!"

"I got it from the library. You can watch it later," Soren said. Ike let out a grumbley mumble, and Soren went quiet.

"Okay!" Mist said.

She ran back to mother to find that the water was just perfect, no burny monsters and lots and lots and lots of bubbles.

"Yay, baftime! Thank you, mother!"

Mother leaned down to kiss her forehead and smiled. "No burny monsters."

"And after this, we can go feed the kitties and doggies and watch show about fishies? Can we? Can we?"

"Of course," mother said. "And the cookies should be done by then, too."

"Cookies! Yummy!"

Mist spun around. Today was a good day. A real, real good day.
