August 16: Kingdom of the mad - TRC - Walking On - Fai, Slight KuroFai undertones.
"...thought Alice, and she
went on. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat
"--so long as I get SOMEWHERE," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll
–
All Fai has know throughout his life is frost, cold, bittersweet winter which wraps around him, sheathing him in brilliance.
The people in his world put on warmth, covered themselves in fleece and cloth to guard against this shining wrath, yet their hearts remained cold.
Things happened, he refuses to even think of them, yet sometimes Ashura, his king, comes in
spectral visions which make his heart clench as if it’s being squeezed by translucent hands from the grave.
–
It is easier to smile than explain the reasons for not smiling, and it is easier to forget than bear the ache of remembering. If only he could wipe his memory clean, if only...
He was raised in endless winter, fed lessons that stung like slaps, but without the physical force.
You cannot change the past. He has accepted that. Or so he tells himself nightly.
It is not that the smile isn’t real, for he has always been cheerful, always looking for a tomorrow that might not exist. It is merely that life caught up with him and stole the very thing she clung to.
“You are our sun, in this world, our warmth” it was said, and he warmed their hearts with humor and smiles which reached his eyes then but fail to now.
His smiles aren’t fake. Or at least not all of them.
–
“What are you running from?” Kurogane asks with a critical gaze.
Fai just smiles. This smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes, and Kurogane takes note.
Kurogane adds it to all the little things he’s found out about Fai, and the picture he’s piecing together becomes clearer, he isn’t patient, but he can wait out anyone. There are aspects no one would guess about Kurogane, and it is precisely that which he uses so well.
Kurogane isn’t stupid, he can place the pieces together and form this puzzle, but there’s always just enough missing to make it vague, blurry and unrecognizable.
Kurogane swears he will fit this puzzle together. He will figure out why Fai’s face can change from heartrending pain to childish joy in a matter of seconds, moments where a veil was quickly recovered.
Now if only he could figure out why it bothered him so.
[Er a bit late. I’m sorry ;_; Classes ate me and I collapsed right after I got home.
And I’m not sure about the characterization. Fai is hard to pin down, harder than Tsuzuki, harder than Fuji. Please poke me with crit if you have any suggestions]
