The job was not going to well, to put it lightly.

It had been simple enough on paper. Go in as salarymen, find the documents that applied to the most recent case and the string of murders which had been happening in the latest construction sites, and then get out and investigate them.

However, Hisoka knew that when it came to life and death–and especially when Tsuzuki was involved– nothing ever went simply.

They'd run into a slight hitch as soon as they'd come in after dark. Hisoka had managed to locate the janitor's keys, and Tsuzuki had caused a distraction. That first part hadn't even been part of the plan, he just caused distractions wherever he went, whether it was excessive pie eating, or the fact that three of the secretaries had crushes on him and had a habit of pulling him off into loud, gossipy groups.

And giving him pie. Which was just playing dirty.

Not that Hisoka cared. Really.

What happened that night wasn't pie, or girl related, but ghost related. Hisoka recognized the dark, clammy feel of the ghost as soon as they walked into the locked office they couldn't reach before.

The keys jangled, the door swung open, and they found...absolute cleanness. Even Tatsumi would've envied such a dirt-free office.

"Wow," Tsuzuki said. "It's just like Tat—" He froze, a look of pure horror on his face.

That's when the sounds started, and the papers began to menacingly rearrange themselves into neat stacks.

Tsuzuki let out a shriek as the pencils all went into neat little rows. He clung to Hisoka, but the differences in their sizes made it feel uncomfortable, like Tsuzuki was squashing him.

"Getoff–!" Hisoka said. He blushed furiously, and tried to shake free, but Tsuzuki clung tight.

"But Hisoka, it's scary!" Tsuzuki said.

'You're dead. Why is a dead guy terrified of ghosts?!" Hisoka said.

"Oh, I'm not afraid of most ghosts, but that one is terrifying! He looks just like Tatsumi when it comes time to give out paychecks, or I have to do a report," Tsuzuki said.

The ghost materialized again, and Hisoka did have to admit it looked like the accountant from hell. Horn rim glasses, brown suit, an no-nonsense expression. He looked like he might cut someone's pay like it was nobody's business. Tsuzuki whimpered behind him, and he heard a snatch of no, no, don't cut my paaaaay. I need that for pie!

Hisoka glared right back at the ghost. He glared with the force of several sleepless nights. He glared with the full intensity of being eternally a teenager, and doomed to be filled with stupid teenage hormones and teenage angst for the rest of his afterlife.

The stopped in its malevolent organizing, as if surprised it might be challenged.

"Cross over to the other side, or I swear I will take you there myself," Hisoka said in a low, dangerous voice which might have even made Tatsumi shudder a little.

Surprisingly, the ghost brushed nonexistent dirt off its suit, and disappeared. The chill in the air disappeared. The pencils remained in neat little rows.

For a moment, Tsuszuki froze and clung even tighter. Then he slowly took a few steps back.

"Wow, Hisoka, you're even scarier than Tatsumi," Tsuzuki said. "But that exorcism was really something! You showed that OCD ghost who was boss."

Hisoka pushed his overgrown bangs out of his face. They said that hair and nails grew after death, and they were entirely right.

"Now get to work, or I'll exorcize you!" Hisoka said.

Tsuzuki let out a shreik of Waah! So scary! but he did as he was told.

And Hisoka went back to trying to pretend like he wasn't cursed with teenage hormones which were informing him that for one, being clung to felt nice, and his partner? May have been an idiot, but he was a loving idiot who could be downright distracting at times when he wasn't pushed against him.

And it only made him crankier.
