They’d gone out for dinner that evening. Book bags and tennis bags in tow, they’d settled down on a secluded section of the park between their homes. It was still warm for the season, though the nights were growing colder by the day, and soon they'd have to move their meetings–and practice–indoors.

With his rice bowl empty and the chopsticks set aside, Fuji entwined his fingers. He loved Thai food, which meant it was inevitable that Tezuka would eventually be introduced to it as well. Fuji smiled wide as Tezuka took the first bite. In retrospect, the fact that Fuji was holding a pitcher of water should have clued him in.

"You’ve been spending too much time around Inui," he admonished when he finally stopped gasping.

Fuji chuckled. "Have I, now?"

Fuji’s preferences were a variety of peppers spicy enough that it could likely burn plastic if given half the chance. Tezuka preferred food that didn’t give third-degree burns to the roof of his mouth.

"Maa, I guess I'll let you pick the restaurant next time," Fuji said. He wiped away the last traces of the spicy food and smiled.

Tezuka only said a noncommital Hn, and continued sipping his water.

"Really, Tezuka, I didn't think you'd react so to such a mild dish. Not a fan of spicy things?" Fuji teased.

Tezuka grimaced and sipped a bit more water. "What is mild to you and to others is quite different," he said.

Fuji laughed. "Maybe."

After that, they just sat in companionable silence. They didn't have to clutter it with words.

Maybe that was one reason why they'd become friends. They both understood how to be still and silent. Neither needed to chat away the quiet, filling in every still moment like Eiji did.

Inui, and many others had questioned their strange friendship. They didn’t talk often, and seemed entirely wrong for each other. Tezuka was stoic, while Fuji was enigmatic, prone to being flighty and bored easily. Wouldn’t Fuji be bored by Tezuka? (By no means) Wouldn’t Tezuka find Fuji infuriating? (He did at times.)

So why were they friends? Simply because they were. No explanations given, for Fuji loved to withhold things and Tezuka was legendarily tacit. There were bonds between them, stronger than words, deeper than mere teammates. Not quite rivals, nor did they share every little thing.

But they still went out for Thai, or Sushi, and still knew each other better than any other. Fuji could say more with one glance than years of deep discussion. Tezuka knew when to push, and how to make Fuji be serious.

So it was that they were unlikely, but Fuji always enjoyed unlikely, surprising things, so it was no wonder.
