A/N: [livejournal.com profile] slashfest: Kate/OFC Kate focused; Kate's always been a little leery of guys ever since...well, ever since. But now (because of 'insert other female' here) she's starting to think she might just prefer girls. I kind of...mixed it up with others. (Also, the first OFC is Heather incognito She's obvs becoming the next Jack Harkness.)

The woman was back near the park for the third time in the past three weeks. She was sipping some form of latte, with a foam mustache which she licked off. She was beautiful, anyone would have said so. Thick golden hair fell about her shoulders. She wore a purple tube top, heels and tight pants. She exuded confidence from every pore in a most sultry way. No one could keep their eyes off of her, Kate thought. Straight men, gay men, straight women...all would turn their head as she tossed her hair and walked on.

Kate always been a little leery of guys ever since...well, ever since. She'd paced herself until she could come to the park again without feeling a tightening in her chest. That was one of the first things she'd done to try and claw back from the oppressive feeling of helplessness that had settled over her. The second had been donning the mask and bows of Hawkeye. But this wasn't the first time she'd thought of this. There'd been that unsaid thing between her and Carrie, her best friend in middle school. Carrie had always been the affectionate sort, which Kate had never been at the best of days, even before the incident occurred. But Carrie had a way of worming herself into a person's life, and was so effervescent that she could open up anyone, no matter how they resisted. She was very affectionate, and always touching people. She hugged Kate, and nuzzled her between classes like Kate had become her favorite person in the whole world.

Then she'd gone and dated that jerk Kent. He'd cheated on her, and the drama had just spiraled down from there. All that time, all Kate could feel was a stinging resentment that Carrie had chosen him over her. But that was just the middle school drama. A lot of girl's friendships were close. Girls hugged each other all the time, they snuggled and giggled and it wasn't weird. It didn't mean anything. It wasn't denial so much..just rationalization. Kate didn't rush into things. She didn't mull over them unduly either. Even that dark time, she hadn't allowed herself to linger on the feelings any longer than to push her into gear to make sure that she stopped it from happening to other women.

And then, there were times when she'd looked a little too long at Cassie, and felt a fluttering in her chest when their arms brushed. That fluttering had turned to disappointment which she had bit back when Cassie fell hard for Nathan. She bit back everything but snark and annoyance these days. Fear coiled in her chest, and with each kick, she was fighting against being ever that paralyzed and helpless again.

She remembered a slight tension between her and Nico. They were birds of a feather. Had they been in the same team, they probably would've been friends. Nico was beautiful, of course. Karolina perhaps even more so. She'd stared a little too long when Xavin had shifted to female form and had kissed Karolina before they'd bid the Runaways goodbye.

It been really beautiful, that kiss. They were all soft lines meeting, Xavin's hands lovingly tengling in Karolina's luminescent hair. Tommy had smirked at her for days when he caught her looking. Even now, she had a feeling that he'd start teasing her if he didn't suspect that half the team would bring about his death in a painful fashion. (You just did not mess with gay rights with Billy and Teddy on the team. Not even jokingly.)

A guy approached the girl, and something in Kate's chest tightened. She wished she had her bow a mask handy. She fingered the side of her can of mace. The metal felt cool against her heated fingertips. Even as she told herself told herself that not all men were rapists, it was the approach that made something in her cringe. She could spend all day by the rest of the Young Avengers. By Billy and Teddy, Eli and even Tommy without a hint of fear rising in her chest. It was only the approach, the sweet talk, the hey baby, want me to take you home? that dredged the memories up and put her on edge.

But the girl seemed quite adept at taking care of herself. Kate was too far to hear what she said, but whatever it was, it was brutal. The guy left, chagrined. The girl pushed back her blond locks in irritation, and opened a compact to powder her nose, and then reapply her lipstick. They were full, kissable lips. That was the first thought that entered Kate's mind. Then, there was the image of Karolina and Xavin's kiss, only replaced by herself and the girl. A pulse of energy went through her. Her heart raced in a fluttering maze of desire at the mere thought.

The girl noticed her, and smiled her way. She exuded self-confidence without a hint of shyness.
Kate looked away, trying to hide a blush. She wasn't a blusher by nature. She attributed it to being still a little flustered from that image of the kiss that wasn't. She was pretty sure this clinched the question of her sexuality. This realization didn't make everything all right, though. She still felt confused, but now she at least had a clue. She pulled out her cell phone and dialed Billy. Maybe at least one of them would have a clue between the two of them.

I kind of want to do a sequel where the entire Young Avengers (and possibly Runaways) try to fix Kate up with a girl. I can just see Billy going Jewish mother on her. I HAVE A COUSIN ABOUT YOUR AGE— I'm pretty sure [livejournal.com profile] traincat will approve of this and probably like. DO STUFF TO ENSURE IT HAPPENS.
