Summary: Why would a woman of the plains choose to take the garb of Nifl? Because it reminds her of her girlfriend, of course.
Author's note:
MRW Nifl Lyn resplendent.
Me: Why Lyn, a woman of the plains, Nifl?
Me: Ohhh, she's dressed like her gf! I see, I see!
I was writing R!Lyn from memory as I don't have her, so I took a little liberty with her outfit. For yuri reasons. That too, is yuri.
Happy birthday, Sarajaye.
The faint fringe of lacy snowflakes was at the sides. It was layered, to keep warmth in. The shear of the insides brushed against her legs. The clothes of Nifl were made to keep them warm.
It was blue, with the shape of snowflakes in her hair, and up the high collar. A long cape came down her back, to help with warmth. Her boots came up all the way to her thighs, laced and tight, even protective.
It didn't look like the garb of a woman of the plains, and a swordswoman. If they'd asked, what could she say? Except for the woman before her. Her most beloved friend, and more.
Florina clasped her hands as she looked Lyn over. Her eyes were starry as she took Lyn's new outfit in.
"Wow, Lyn! You look amazing. You took the kingdom of Nifl for your new outfit?
Lyn smiled. When choosing the new garb, she thought of the cold on her face. How Florina spoke of her land of ice and snow, how the cold left Florina's cheeks flushed. How Florina and her always spoke of going to her homeland, seeing her family one last time and being wed in winter.
And she thought of Florina, most of all.
Florina reached out to touch the fringe of snowflake like lace that tied back Lyn's long green ponytail.
"It'll be perfect for visiting my country, when we return," Florina said.
"Though I guess that will be a long time out yet. Though, my sisters have come to Askr now, so they can attend our wedding."
"Oh, will we have three weddings then? One for the plains, one for the north, and one for Askr?" Lyn teased.
"I think we shall have to," Florina said, with a faint blush which was so very cute.
"You know, Nifl reminds me so much of home. The dunes of snow, the unforgiving cold, and the beautiful way the sun shines on the ice-encrusted snow. It helps me when I miss home."
Florina laughed softly. "You wouldn't think a place like that would be missed, but I do, sometimes."
"No, I understand. I miss the plains often," Lyn said.
Lyn smiled.
"Actually, I have a mission to Nifl. Come with me?"
"Of course. I'll be right there with you," Lyn said.
Florina helped her up onto the back of her pegasus with her.
Huey's wings soared above the white lands beneath them.
"Are you cold?" Lyn said.
"I'm used to it. It's almost nostalgic," Florina said.
"Hold on tight, Lyn! We're passing through the mountains!"
Lyn held tight about Florina's waist as they both headed through the green pine trees, all covered with white. It was warm against her body there, enough to beat out the chill.
Huey landed just a short ways from the spring. It was intensely clear, and filled with sparkling and glimmering stones at the bottom.
"What was it we needed to do again?" Lyn spoke above the cold wind about them.
"We need to get the icestones to infuse with the weapons. Some of the people from Nifl need them to refine and hone their weapons," Florina said.
"Couldn't we simply ask Nifl herself?" Lyn said.
"She's kind of prickly. It's easier just to harvest them, believe it or not," Florina said. "A-At least I'd rather brave the colds of the land of Nifl than Nifl herself."
"Ahh, I see. Though if she is mean to you, she will have to answer to me," Lyn said. Her hand was at her sword.
"Oh, you can't do that. People in Askr can't hurt each other. They're bound by contracts," Florina said quickly.
"We could still spar, until she learned her lesson for being so cruel to you," Lyn said.
"Oh, Lyn...don't get yourself hurt," Florina said tenderly.
"Don't worry about me. I'd be fine," Lyn said.
"Oh, but I do!"
Around them was a clear, clean pool of sparkling water. Florina reached into the water and pulled up the small, frozen stones. She flinched the first time. Her hands became instantly red from the intense cold. But, she pushed on with the same kind of bravery that made her take up her pegasus the first time, and fight on even when she was afraid.
"Are you all right, Florina?" Lyn said.
"I-I'll be okay."
"Let's work quickly before you catch chill," Lyn said.
Lyn and Florina filled up the bag. Florina would plunge her arms all the way past her elbow into the freezing water and pull out icestones, which crackled with power of the element water. Lyn had once heard that these icestones were the crystalized tears from Nifl when she lost her champion, Hervegel.
Lyn grew more concerned as they worked, but she knew Florina would stubbornly cling to her duty, as she always did. Especially if it meant staying by Lyn's side.
"T-There, that's all of them." Florina's teeth chattered.
Lyn wrapped up Florina in her cloak. Close together, brushed the snowflakes from Florina's wavy purple hair in a tender gesture. Then, she clasped Florina's hands in hers to warm them.
"You got too cold," Lyn said softly. In the cold air, their breaths were visible for a moment. "I need to warm you up."
"I didn't want your hands to get too cold, so you couldn't draw your sword," Florina said. It came out shy, with red cheeks not just from the cold.
Lyn leaned even closer.
"I'll keep you warm."
Lips on cold, chapped lips. Their hands clasped until warmth began to fill Florina's cold, red hands. The cape about them, so warm that not even the wind and chill of Nifl could get to them.
Maybe this garb wasn't as smooth and seamless for swordplay. But, it could hardly compare to the joy of pulling Florina close and warming the both of them completely with the cloak, the thick, layered blue dress.
