meme culture is just...

omg I know that meme! Hey, let's look at knowyourmeme...wait, it was based on racist/antisemetic/homophobic thing originally??????

I cannot even count the number of times the popular meme of the day turns out to be something from 4chan than was like nothing but slurs but in six degrees of separation I got it from my feed full of queer POCs who didn't realize that it started out like...that and are using it gayly about their blorbos now.

Refuse to elaborate gigachad? Was about antisemitism. Change my mind? Was about transphobia. "___ did nothing wrong?" originally the ___ was Hitler. YES meme? That's Aryan man wojack and it's usually about white supremacy/nazis. (The female one is a tradwife, also.)

Kinda wild how fast memes can go that people so against the original problematic context can gleefully use it about gay stuff.

ANYWAYS, IT SUCKS. And yet I am shocked every time.

Considering Tumblr/Twitter has a thing for going GUESS WHAT YOUR FAVORITE KIDS' STORIES/THIS THING YOU GOT SO USED TO IN DAILY LIFE HAS PROBLEMATIC ORIGINS!!, this is...sickeningly ironic. Or hypocritical if they're aware of the memes' origins and still happily use them about their blorbos as if they invented them.

That said, Tumblr/Twitter also has a thing for "let's take this from the bigots and make it ours" so maybe they know and that's what they're trying to do. Though I may be giving them too much credit.
