Series: Antique Bakery / HanaKimi
Character/pairing: Ono, Tachibana, Akiha (Akiha/Umeda)
Rating: PG
Word count: 797
Author's note: fic_promptly: Author's choice, author's choice, fruit tart. I've been threatening to write this for ages, and recently I got reminded of it and did it. Happy winter holidays, Becky :D
Akiha comes in often to the bakery. He's got a sweet tooth, and Ono is all too happy to fill it. He's even started putting out special cakes and fruit tarts made extra sweet just for him. Quite frankly, he's got a bit of a crush. The man is tall and full of lean muscle, with his hair pulled back in a blond ponytail. His smile is lovely, a sort of smile that takes up his whole body, and he smiles easily.
Especially when he talks about his lover.
(He would've been simply "the man" or perhaps "the golden one" if Chikage hadn't come across an article all about Akiha, an internationally known photographer. It only made the crush deepen after seeing the sort of beauty he could create by catching sides of life no one saw.)
Often when he comes, he thoughtfully looks around and takes a few shots. They turn into beautiful shots, unconventional, and hardly the standard magazine fare. He doesn't even charge them for them, instead giving them as gifts to be framed to join the elaborate decor.
He's the only man other than Tachibana who has ever been immune to him. Every day Ono bakes better cakes, makes him fruit tarts and all sorts of delicacies, and yet Akiha treats him with only friendliness.
He wonders who this lover must be, to keep such a hold on him.
One day, he gets his answer.
Akiha doesn't come alone. He's never seen the lover before, but now he comes in, looking grudging and grumpy as he comes in from the grey, cold day. They're wrapped up in coats: Akiha's is white, and his lover's is black. Akiha wears a colorful scarf of blues and pinks, while his lover wears one of plain grey. His lover is handsome in a harsh way, with a seeming perpetual grimace and a disdainful air. His hair is dark brown, mostly obscured by his black knit hat which is pulled down low over his ears. He is tall as well, with broad shoulders and a sleek, graceful build.
Ono has to admire Akiha's taste in men.
"See, see, we'll have a cake for our anniversary!" he says. He looks childish and beautiful, holding onto his lover's arm. His face lit up in ways Ono had never seen before.
Akiha's lover sighs and pushes up his glasses as he looks. No one, young or old can resist his confections, but this man seems indifferent to them. Akiha's lover has a sour expression that sometimes softens when Akiha isn't looking. He's rough around the edges, muttering an idiot as Akiha bends to stare at all the cakes in the display.
"I made these special for my favorite customer," Ono says. He isn't usually on front duty, but sometimes he can't help it when Akiha is around. Especially as Tachibana needs cigarette breaks from time to time, and Kanada is always busy in the kitchen.
Akiha beams. "Thank you! And this is my favorite bakery of all~ Senpai likes it too~"
His lover scoffs, but glances suspiciously at Ono. Then, he freezes and shakes his head quickly, as if to shake the offending thought out.
Akiha is all too eager to take the fruit tarts, the cakes and other delicacies he has made. His lover shoulders some of the load, and doesn't draw back when Akiha nuzzles against him for a moment, though he does mutter a we're in public, idiot.
Ono watches the door for a long time after they've gone. He knows when he's lost.
*
Later after Kanada has gone home, Ono washes the dishes. The count is three now, three men who
will never fall in love with him.
Tachibana narrows his eyes. "You're moody today."
"Oh no," he says, and smiles. "Just a little thoughtful. It seems you're not the only one who is immune to me."
Tachibana snorts. "It seems you're losing your touch."
"Maybe," Ono says.
And then they fall to silence because that's how they are, and even if the words aren't said, they both know the simple truth that Ono has never gotten over him.
Perhaps never will.
But that's how it is with first loves.
He thinks this must be the bond, the magic wire that holds him so tightly to his lover that all Ono's charms will never lead him astray, even a little. He lifts a soapy glass and smiles. He imagines it full of wine, and toasts to their happiness.
