They’d started as a small guerrilla group, a few vagabonds with a dream. Somehow, she’d won over the king’s favor and turned into the top general. It had seemed as if this change had shifted from overnight. One day, a ragtag group, the next, the highest position in the army.
Now there were people she barely knew under her command. Their lives were held in the palms of her hands. One wrong call, one prediction that proved to be false and they would be dead.
She’d once stepped away from the world, closed away in a world of cast fates and silver coins. She wore cloaks to hide her hair and bowed her head in the way of a hag. She stayed at the far edge of town with the nomadic types of people, with people who never remembered a face long.
Time certainly changed things. Now she was in the most visible position in the army. People didn’t just see her, they believed in her in a fanatic way. She only can hope that she won’t let them down.
Still, she was never alone. At times Edward and Leonardo would pass a canteen when the day grew too hot, and Laura felt over her forehead and fussed over her whenever possible..
Whenever she felt dizzy it was Sothe’s hand that steadied her. He was never far away, always there to protect her from whatever danger she faced. She was not sure that even they would be enough to save her on the day when her nature was revealed, for she knew that something was different long before she found the word branded out for what it was. But they would stay by her side even if everyone else turned.
It was by them, and for them that she was a general. Even if she was as much the people’s as herself, it was them that she placed her trust, a trust she knew would not be broken.
